Mari's brace lifts Rapids past 'Caps

Apr 6, 2014 - 12:40 AM Vancouver, BC (SportsNetwork.com) - Jose Mari struck twice in a three-minute span on Saturday as the Colorado Rapids earned a 2-1 victory over Vancouver Whitecaps FC at BC Place.

Both teams struggled to generate quality scoring chances in the opening half, but the game really opened up in the second 45 minutes and Vancouver found the first breakthrough in the 66th minute.

Darren Mattocks netted his first goal of the season for Vancouver when he pounced on a headed pass from Kenny Miller and lofted it over the head of Colorado goalkeeper Clint Irwin.

The match turned in the favor of Colorado in the 77th minute when cheeky forward Matias Laba was shown a second yellow card and the Rapids took advantage quickly as just two minutes later Mari blasted a curling left footed strike off the far post and behind 'Caps goalkeeper David Ousted.

Colorado then snagged the lead just two minutes later as he collected a pass from Nathan Sturgis and drilled it past Ousted to complete his double.

Vancouver created a handful of opportunities down the stretch as the fourth official's board showed four minutes of stoppage time, but the Rapids held on to claim all three points.
