Ten-man RSL tames Rapids

Aug 3, 2014 - 3:04 AM Commerce City, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - A 14th-minute goal from Javier Morales was enough as 10-man Real Salt Lake held off the Colorado Rapids for a 1-0 win at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on Saturday in the latest edition of the Rocky Mountain Cup.

Morales scored after some nice work from Chris Wingert, while RSL went down to 10 men in the 46th minute when Aaron Maund received a straight red card.

But the visitors were able to hold off the Rapids to extend their unbeaten streak to four games, while Colorado has now lost three of its last four matches.

Salt Lake won the first meeting of the season between the two sides, 2-1, and the visitors started well as Robbie Findley forced Rapids goalkeeper Clint Irwin to make a nice stop after 10 minutes.

Four minutes later, Salt Lake took the lead as Wingert did well to win the ball on the left wing before dropping off a pass to Morales inside the penalty area, where he fired a shot inside the left post from 12 yards.

The Rapids should have been level in the 28th when Dillon Powers nodded a ball down for Deshorn Brown in front of goal, but the forward somehow drilled his shot over the net from close range.

Maund was sent off just after the second-half kickoff as he brought down Colorado's Vicent Sanchez as he attempted to break in free on goal.

Referee Baldomero Toledo had little choice but to issue a straight red card, and Salt Lake had to play the remainder of the match with 10 men.

However, RSL stayed organized and made it very tough for the Rapids to carve out many clear-cut chances.

The best opportunity for the hosts came in the 61st minute when a cross from Sanchez was headed on target by Brown, only for RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando to make a fine diving stop to keep the ball out.
