Wright-Phillips ties single-season scoring record; RBNY top SKC
Oct 27, 2014 - 2:32 AM Kansas City, KS (SportsNetwork.com) - Bradley Wright-Phillips tied the MLS single-season scoring record on Sunday with a goal in each half as the New York Red Bulls rolled past Sporting Kansas City, 2-0, at Sporting Park.Wright-Phillips, who has been in exceptional goal-scoring form for almost the entire season, fired home in the 15th and 70th minutes to finish the regular campaign with 27 goals, equaling Roy Lassiter and Chris Wondolowski for the most in a season.
The win sees New York finish in fourth place in the East with 50 points, while Sporting finishes in fifth place in the East on 49 points. The clubs will meet in the Eastern Conference knockout round game, next Thursday at Red Bull Arena.
The visitors struck first after 15 minutes when Eric Alexander did well to send a through ball in the direction of Wright-Phillips, Sporting defender Aurelien Collin, put in a challenge, but didn't get enough of the ball and Wright-Phillips found it and fired it past SKC goalkeeper Eric Kronberg.
Wright-Phillips picked up the record-tying tally 20 minutes from time with some excellent individual work. The England native did well to chase down a long ball on the left flank, fight off Collin, turn and rip it into the bottom left corner.
Wright-Phillips had an excellent opportunity to break the scoring record in the 83rd minute as he went in 1-v-1 with Sporting defender Matt Besler, but fired a strike on goal that was handled by Kronberg.
The fourth official's board showed four minutes of additional time, but Sporting rarely threatened the New York net and ended the 90 minutes with just one attempt on target.
