Arrieta lifts United over Impact
Mar 7, 2015 - 10:01 PM Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Jairo Arrieta's second-half strike proved to be the winner on Saturday as D.C. United opened their 2015 season with a 1-0 victory over the Montreal Impact at RFkK Stadium. After falling to the rival New York Red Bulls in the postseason, United was hoping to start the new season in positive fashion and newcomer Arrieta's goal in the 58th minute handed the hosts all three points.
It was a tight affair through a scoreless 45 minutes and Montreal fashioned the first good chance of the second half when Justin Mapp forced United goalkeeper Bill Hamid into a diving save.
But the home side found the only tally minutes later as Chris Rolfe sent an excellent ball over the top to Arrieta and the former Columbus Crew striker made no mistake, sliding it past out-of-position Montreal goalkeeper Evan Bush.
Montreal sent speedy forward Dominic Oduro on with four minutes to play hoping for an offensive spark and, despite several quality scoring chances a late equalizer wasn't to be and United claimed all three points.
