Rapids battle back to draw 10-man Union

Jul 13, 2014 - 1:28 AM Chester, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Colorado Rapids struck twice in the final 15 minutes of play on Saturday to come away with a point in a thrilling 3-3 draw against the Philadelphia Union at PPL Park.

Philadelphia collected goals from Conor Casey, Sheanon Williams and Andrew Wenger to build a seemingly comfortable 3-1 lead. But Colorado responded with tallies from Dillon Serna, Dillon Powers and Deshorn Brown to snatch a point from the 10-man Union away from home.

Philadelphia improves to seventh in the East with 19 points, while Colorado improves to 27 points in the Western Conference.

The hosts opened the scoring in the 16th minute as Casey got on the end of a low cross from defender Raymon Gaddis and ripped it past Rapids goalkeeper Clint Irwin.

But the lead lasted only two minutes as the Rapids responded with an equalizer through Serna, who cut inside and fired a low strike past Union goalkeeper Zac MacMath just inside the near post.

Philadelphia reclaimed the lead in the 31st minute as Cristian Maidana swung a well-struck corner kick into the box where Williams nodded it home at the far post.

The Union made it 3-1 in the 74th as Wenger jumped on a loose ball in the box and fired it home, but things unraveled from there as midfielder Michael Lahoud was sent off for a high challenge on Rapids rookie Jared Watts in the 77th minute, which also resulted in a penalty kick.

Powers converted the spot kick to make it 3-2 and hand the momentum to the Rapids, who then fired home the equalizer four minutes from time as Brown beat MacMath from close range.
