Galaxy edge RSL to extend unbeaten streak

Jul 13, 2014 - 4:36 AM Carson, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Los Angeles Galaxy saw their unbeaten run reach seven games on Saturday as a first-half goal from Gyasi Zardes was enough for a 1-0 win over Real Salt Lake at the StubHub Center.

Zardes struck after 20 minutes and Galaxy goalkeeper Jaime Penedo made it hold up along with the Los Angeles defense as the hosts handed Salt Lake its fourth defeat in six games.

Baggio Husidic nearly put the Galaxy in front early in the match when he had the ball in the back of the net, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.

However, the home side didn't have to wait too long for Zardes to find the net as RSL's Javier Morales went down in midfield and lost possession of the ball, leading to a Galaxy break that saw Marcelo Sarvas feed Zardes for the goal.

The visitors had trouble dealing with the Galaxy midfield and were unable to really mount much of an attack in the opening 45 minutes.

A giveaway early in the second half from Chris Wingert nearly handed the Galaxy a second goal, but RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando did well to prevent Robbie Keane from doubling the lead.

Kyle Beckerman went close with a shot from long distance a few minutes later, and after Husidic saw a shot whistle past the post, Beckerman was at it again in the final five minutes with a powerful drive that Penedo was happy to see sail past his net.

RSL had one final chance in stoppage time when Ned Grabavoy took a pass from Olmes Garcia and slipped into the penalty area, only to fire his shot into the outside of the net from close range.

Sarvas had a chance in the dying moments of the game to add to the lead, but his penalty kick was saved by Rimando.
