Garcia's double lifts RSL past 10-man Impact
Jul 25, 2014 - 4:09 AM Sandy, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - Olmes Garcia netted a second-half double on Thursday as Real Salt Lake eased past the 10-man Montreal Impact, 3-1, at Rio Tinto Stadium. The home side wasted no time grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck as Luke Mulholland struck just three minutes in, but Hassoun Camara found an equalizer for Montreal in the 31st minute.
Garcia's winner came 20 minutes from time and he added a second tally in stoppage time to hand all three points to RSL, which extended its unbeaten streak in league play to a modest two games.
Montreal, meanwhile, continued to struggle as the club suffered its fourth straight loss and has not won a road match in league play since Sept. 8, 2013 -- a 4-2 result at Gillette Stadium over the New England Revolution.
The opening strike came after just three minutes when a second ball following a Javier Morales corner kick fell kindly to the feet of Mulholland, who blasted it past Montreal goalkeeper Evan Bush to the near post.
But Montreal answered with an equalizer when Calum Mallace collected the ball on the right flank and cut it back inside the box to Camara, who slid it home to the far post for his first goal of the campaign.
The visitors went down to 10 men 25 minutes from time when midfielder Issey Nakajima-Farran was shown a straight red card for a studs-up late challenge on RSL defender Chris Schuler.
Playing with the extra man, the hosts took the lead 20 minutes from time as Morales lofted a well-weighted cross into the area for Garcia to nod home past Bush for his first goal in MLS play since July 13, 2013.
Garcia then completed his double in stoppage time, firing past Bush from the right side of the penalty area with ease to wrap up the result.
The result moves RSL into second place in the Western Conference with 32 points, six behind Seattle, while Montreal remains on the bottom of the East with 14 points.
