Union continue to roll with victory at TFC
Sep 6, 2014 - 8:09 PM Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - The Philadelphia Union's sublime run of form continued on Saturday as the club netted two first-half goals en route to a 2-0 defeat of Toronto FC at BMO Field.Philadelphia edged Toronto, 1-0, at PPL Park on Wednesday and continued its dominance over the Canadian club by claiming three points north of the border, taking the Union (9-9-9) into a tie with the New England Revolution for third place in the Eastern Conference.
Toronto (9-11-6) continues to struggle as the club is winless in league play since Aug. 9, managing to take just one point from its last five games.
The Union broke the deadlock after only eight minutes in Saturday's contest as Sheanon Williams delivered a tantalizing cross to the center of the penalty area for Conor Casey to turn in with a snap header.
Toronto looked likely to make it to the halftime interval with just a one-goal deficit until Philadelphia managed to pad its lead with a goal in the 44th minute. Williams was once again the provider as he sent a header back across goal for Andrew Wenger to nod home with a shot to the back post.
The hosts regrouped at halftime and heaped pressure on the Philadelphia net, but a stout shot-stopping display from Zac MacMath, as well as the woodwork denying Jackson's rocket of a shot late in the affair, kept Toronto at bay and ensured a clean sheet for the Union.
