Le Toux's late PK helps Union earn draw with RBNY
Sep 13, 2014 - 10:29 PM Chester, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Sebastien Le Toux converted a penalty kick in stoppage time to help salvage a 2-2 draw for the Philadelphia Union against Red Bull New York on Saturday at a rain-soaked PPL Park.Kickoff was delayed for over an hour because of the water-logged pitch, and New York got going late in the first half with goals from Peguy Luyindula and Thierry Henry three minutes apart.
But the Union battled back and pulled to within 2-1 at halftime through Pedro Ribeiro before Le Toux's late heroics following a foul on Ribeiro by Ibrahim Sekagya inside the box.
New York remains one point clear of the Union as both teams continue to chase a playoff spot in the tight Eastern Conference.
The field conditions created a sluggish first 35 minutes, but Luyindula helped bring the game to life in the 37th when he was pulled down inside the penalty area by the Union's Ethan White.
The Frenchman stepped to the spot and sent goalkeeper Zac MacMath the wrong way, while Henry added a second goal a few minutes later with a first-time shot from the top of the box that skipped in front of MacMath and managed to find a way through for a 2-0 lead.
Ribeiro responded instantly for the Union when he blocked a clearance from Jamison Olave and saw the ball redirect into the New York net for his first MLS goal.
The hosts asked most of the questions after the break, and Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles made a point-blank save on Maurice Edu to keep his side in front, while Edu scuffed the rebound wide.
But Ribeiro created a chance late in the game and was tripped by Sekagya as he attempted to get in on goal, allowing Le Toux to fire home the equalizer from the spot.
