Sparks pull out 2OT win over Shock
Aug 26, 2013 - 3:45 AM Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Candace Parker filled the box score and scored the go-ahead basket late in the second overtime to lead the Los Angeles Sparks over the Tulsa Shock, 90-88, in a nail biter Sunday at Staples Center.Parker finished with 26 points, 11 rebounds, nine assists and three blocks while Nneka Ogwumike scored 11 of her 21 points after regulation for the Sparks, who went into the fourth quarter trailing by 19 points.
Liz Cambage pulled down 14 rebounds and added eight points and six blocks for the Shock, but she was on the bench with ice on her left ankle when the Sparks made their comeback.
Candice Wiggins and Riquna Williams paced Tulsa with 20 and 17 points, respectively.
A low-scoring first half ended with the Shock holding a 30-27 lead, and the visitors nearly doubled their production in a 28-point third quarter as they made half of their 18 field goal attempts.
The shooting display resulted in a 58-39 cushion, but Tulsa went cold in the fourth quarter and the Sparks eventually pulled even.
Ogwumike scored the go-ahead bucket on a nice inside feed from Parker with 1:03 left in the first OT, then added a tough basket inside the next time down. Ogwumike was cut on her left eye while celebrating, but returned with a bandage and made the free throw for a 76-72 lead.
Wiggins, though, followed a 3-pointer from Williams with one of her own to force another five minutes of action.
With the score locked at 88-88 with time winding down in the second session, Parker took it to the hole off the dribble and scored inside.
Williams' try from long range rimmed out, and Ogwumike secured the rebound to seal the win.
- Cassie Now that you look at it, yeah, it was a 2 point game, 7 lead changes, double overtime, yeah, it deserves being EPIC.
