Jack Riewoldt rocks big stage at the MCG
Oct 1, 2017 - 6:28 AM Jack Riewoldt confirmed his rockstar status with his stunning post-grand final cameo with The Killers.Riewoldt, long idolised by Richmond fans for his football deeds, strutted on stage at the MCG and belted out the Las Vegas outfit's hit Mr Brightside after the Tigers' 48-point win over Adelaide.
"I was trending more than Donald Trump last night," a jubilant Riewoldt told the crowd at the club's grand final fan day at Punt Road Oval on Sunday.
"I've got to cut the celebrations short as I'm going on tour with The Killers."
It was initially thought the duet with lead singer Brandon Flowers was an impromptu move made in the post-match euphoria of Richmond's drought-breaking win.
But Riewoldt admitted there had been a bit of work go on behind the scenes.
"I'm a massive Killers fan and I might've flagged it with the media department that I wouldn't mind doing it," he said.
"The AFL and The Killers kindly obliged ... you don't get those opportunities often in life, so why not take them?"
Riewoldt's star turn was met with the loud approval of the thousands of Tigers fans still in attendance as well as the band.
"The guy in yellow had a helluva night," the band's official account tweeted.
Any fears of a Meatloaf-style backlash were eased with The Killers winning rave reviews for their pre and post-match shows.
Riewoldt was thrilled to be a invited on stage, but admitted his vocal cords weren't in great shape after yelling himself hoarse during the match.
"I tried to keep the mic far enough away from my mouth so you couldn't hear me singing ... my voice was ruined by then," he said.
"(But for me) it was pretty close to when the final siren went ... that feeling of elation.
"It was pretty cool. They're obviously an awesome act and I'm just pumped that it happened.
"It was great fun."
The Killers' Wikipedia page was amended to include Riewoldt as a former band member on vocals on Sunday.
