Fireworks set for New Year's Eve BBL bash
Dec 30, 2016 - 3:59 AM The Strikers are hoping to put on a dazzling display of swinging willow and sizzling yorkers but could be outdone by the New Year's Eve fireworks show set to blast off during Saturday's BBL clash in Adelaide.Winless in two matches this campaign but undefeated hosting three previous New Year's Eve bashes, the Strikers are expecting a festive atmosphere playing in front of a full house of more than 50,000 fans at Adelaide Oval.
Politicians are even warning that "opportunists are taking advantage of the hottest tickets in town" and for desperate punters to beware of scalpers.
But the biggest concern for the combatants may well be the 9pm fireworks show set to last nine minutes along the riverbank right when the match is on the line.
The Strikers will be without key fast bowler Kane Richardson, who will miss the next two-to-four weeks with a lower back injury.
"Kane had a back complaint after the Scorchers match and further assessment revealed that he has a lumbar facet joint injury and will undergo rehabilitation throughout the next few weeks," said sports science and sports medicine manager John Porter.
Left-arm spinner Tom Andrews comes into the squad after earning selection in South Australia's Domestic One Day Cup squad for the second consecutive year.
Strikers coach Jason Gillespie is remaining positive despite his team's winless start to the season.
"There are areas that the lads themselves have identified that they need to be better in and we've had a couple of days of prep and we're really looking forward to getting out there and playing better," Gillespie said.
Steve O'Keefe didn't travel to Adelaide with the Sixers squad on Friday, as national selectors are set to include a second spinner for Australia's third Test next week against Pakistan at the SCG.
Daniel Hughes has replaced Joe Mennie in the 13-man Sixers squad, while English import Jason Roy is good to go after missing Tuesday night's win over the Perth Scorchers with back spasms.
