Proteas set for big Test lead v Bangladesh

Sep 30, 2017 - 1:14 PM South Africa are heading for a big first-innings advantage in the opening Test against Bangladesh.

The Proteas have reduced the tourists to 8-308 to lead by 188 runs at tea on day three.

Morne Morkel made an important breakthrough for South Africa 10 minutes before tea when he dismissed Mahmudullah for 66 with the second new ball.

Taskin Ahmed was run out three balls later as Bangladesh lost three wickets for 13 just before the break.

South Africa, after being sent in to bat by Bangladesh, declared at 3-496 in their first innings.

Bangladesh clawed back some of the deficit with Mominul Haque's 77 and the half-century by Mahmudullah.

They had four successive half-century partnerships, three of them involving Mominul, who made the highest Test score by a Bangladesh player in South Africa.

But the hosts made sure Mominul and Mahmudullah didn't go on to a big scores.

Spinner Keshav Maharaj, who has figures of 2-89, removed Mominul to a catch at short leg.

Duanne Olivier and Morkel struck in the space of three overs near the end of the session as Sabbir Rahman (30) and Mahmudullah went before Taskin's run out.
