Yankees' Sabathia named AL Pitcher of the Month for July

Aug 3, 2011 - 9:01 PM New York, NY (Sports Network) - New York Yankees ace C.C. Sabathia was named American League Pitcher of the Month for July.

Sabathia went 4-1 with a 0.92 earned-run average, 50 strikeouts, 13 walks, two complete games and one shutout over five starts. Sabathia was tops in all of baseball in July in strikeouts and ERA, and also held hitters to a major- league low .140 average.

On July 5th at Progressive Field, Sabathia scattered five hits and fanned 11 over seven shutout innings to lead the Yanks to a 9-2 win over the Indians. In his next start against the Tampa Bay Rays, the southpaw was just as effective, limiting the Rays to four hits en route to a 1-0 Yankee victory.

Sabathia also struck out career-high 14 hitters and carried perfect game into the seventh in a 4-1 victory over the Mariners on July 27.

Over his last 15 starts since May 19, the lefty has compiled a 13-2 record with a 2.08 ERA, 112 strikeouts and 24 walks.

This was Sabathia's second career pitcher of the month award.

Other pitchers receiving votes included Angels' right-handers Jered Weaver and Ervin Santana; Rangers lefty Derek Holland; Tigers' right-hander Rick Porcello; Tampa Bay righty Jeff Niemann and Indians' right-hander Justin Masterson.
