Rookie Ager leads late charge as Mavericks edge Wizards
Oct 22, 2006 - 3:49 AM DALLAS (Ticker) -- Rookie Maurice Ager made four free throws in the final minute to cap a late rally as the Dallas Mavericks edged the Washington Wizards, 93-90, in a preseason game.Ager scored 16 points and Josh Howard added 15 for the Mavericks, who trailed, 89-76, with 5:35 to play before closing the contest with a 17-1 run.
Dallas' first-round pick in the June draft, Ager sank two free throws with 55 seconds left to give the Mavericks a 91-90 lead. He added two more 18 seconds later.
Devin Harris and Austin Croshere scored 10 points apiece for Dallas, which shot just 38 percent (29-of-76) from the field but held a 50-38 rebounding edge.
Jarvis Hayes scored 21 points, Antonio Daniels added 15 and Caron Butler 14 for the Wizards, who shot 43.5 percent (30-of-69). Hayes has been hampered by injuries the last two seasons.
Both teams played their superstars limited minutes. Dirk Nowitzki scored 12 points in 24 minutes for Dallas and Gilbert Arenas had 10 points in 23 minutes for Washington.
The Mavericks played without Jason Terry, Jerry Stackhouse, Erick Dampier and Anthony Johnson. The Wizards did not use former Mav Antawn Jamison, Darius Songaila and Michael Ruffin.
