Gaze sorry for outburst during Kings win
Dec 23, 2017 - 4:31 PM An emotion-charged Andrew Gaze has apologised to fans for his "colourful language" during Sydney's stirring 101-95 NBL comeback win over Brisbane. After Brisbane hurtled out to a 14-0 early lead and increased it to 27-5, the highly emotive Gaze let fly with some choice words in earshot of fans in the stands behind him.
At one point, Gaze turned around and apologised to a group of fans who were egging him on.
After the match the fans came down to the court to get the Boomers legend's autograph, telling him they were "just joking" when they called him out about his expletives.
Gaze, who has been under tremendous pressure with the Kings anchored on the bottom of the NBL ladder, gave himself up at the post-game press conference suggesting he may be in hot water.
Asked whether there might be something nice under the Christmas tree when he got home, a smiling Gaze replied: "I don't know whether Santa is coming to me, I'm not sure I've been that good.
"Some of the language I was using during the game would suggest there may be some penalties from Santa."
Gaze described the 27-point effort from his star US import Jeome Randle as one of the best NBL games the American has played in Australia.
"We've got a player we can throw the ball to and say 'make something happen' and he made something happen," Gaze said.
"He is a genuine superstar. He destroyed us last year when he was with Adelaide and tonight was one of the best games I have seen him play given the circumstances and what he had to orchestrate."
Gaze said import Jeremy Taylor would have an MRI scan to determine the extent of a knee injury which is likely to sideline him for at least two weeks.
Brisbane coach Andrej Lemanis conceded his players may have relaxed mentally after such a sizzling start.
"Defensive intent was the thing for us tonight," he said.
"We gave up 101 points - 98 of them in the last 35 minutes.
"The back end of quarters is an issue which is disappointing because I thought that's where we had made significant progress in the last month."
