Stanford routs Harvard in opener of Travelers Classic

Nov 10, 2007 - 8:06 AM PALO ALTO, California (Ticker) -- Playing without sophomore star Brook Lopez didn't matter against Harvard.

Drew Shiller scored 18 points and Anthony Goods added 17 as Stanford pounded the Crimson, 111-56, on Friday night in the round-robin Basketball Travelers Classic.

Stanford shot 62 percent (43-of-69) from the field and held Harvard to just 39 percent (19-of-49).

Lopez has been ruled academically ineligible for the fall quarter. He will be able to practice with the team during that time and can become eligible for the entire Pac-10 campaign and any postseason competition if he meets NCAA requirements.

A 7-0 sophomore, Lopez averaged 25.2 minutes, 12.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game last season.

The other four returning starters didn't need Lopez against Harvard, which dropped to 0-9 all-time in the series.

The Cardinal jumped to an 11-1 lead in the first 2 1/2 minutes and increased the bulge to 21-3 on a jumper by Taj Finger just 5 1/2 minutes in.

"Stanford played very well and got off to a good start out of the blocks," said Harvard coach Tommy Amaker, who was making his debut on the Crimson bench. "I thought the way we competed all the way to the end was a real positive. We came here to play three games, and we have to be ready to go tomorrow."

From there the rout was on. Stanford led, 63-28, at the half, shooting 56 percent (24-of-43), including 7-of-12 from the arc.

Evan Harris led Harvard with 14 points.

The Cardinal will play Northwestern State on Saturday.
