SCHOOL: Marquette
POSITION: Guard
HEIGHT: 6-foot-5
WEIGHT: 220 pounds
SCOUTING REPORT: Matthews had a breakout senior season and could prove a steal for some team even if his name isn't called on June 25 - should one decide to sign him after the draft. The projected small forward/shooting guard and son of former NBA player Wes Matthews averaged career bests in points (18.3), rebounds (5.7) and assists (2.5) while shooting a career-high 47.5 percent in his final season with Marquette. In his first three seasons under coach Tom Crean, Matthews scored 11.2 points per game and shot 42.8 percent, but seemed to shine after Buzz Williams was hired to replace Crean in 2008-09. Matthews scored at least 23 points in 10 of the team's 35 games, after never tallying more than 22 during his first three seasons. He also earned second-team All-Big East honors, and was named Marquette's most improved player and defensive player of the year following a fourth straight NCAA tournament appearance. While Matthews is a borderline late second-round pick at best and wasn't invited to last month's draft combine, he had a solid showing at the Portsmouth Invitational in April, averaging 14.3 points and earning a spot on the all-tournament team. That could be enough to earn him a spot in some team's training camp.
