Texas-Pan American tops Utah Valley 56-53
Mar 10, 2010 - 11:55 PM OREM, Utah(AP) -- Nick Weiermiller scored 18 points, including a 3-pointer with 29 seconds left, to lead Texas-Pan American to a 56-53 victory over Utah Valley in the first round of the Great West Conference tournament on Wednesday.Weiermiller's 3-pointer gave Texas-Pan American a 54-53 lead. Matt Mierzycki made two free throws with 17 seconds left to complete the scoring.
Jared Maree scored 11 points and Mierzycki 10 for the Broncs (6-26), the tournament's fifth seed. They next meet regular-season champion South Dakota on Friday.
Justin Baker had 25 points and 10 rebounds for the host Wolverines (12-18), who were the fourth seed. He was the only Southern Utah player in double figures. Tyray Perry had 12 rebounds as the Wolverines held a 40-27 edge on the boards.
The Great West Conference tournament champion does not get an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
