Georgia Tech to review Rice's status
Mar 13, 2012 - 2:45 AM Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Suspended Georgia Tech guard Glen Rice Jr. is under review and a graduate student manager has been dismissed from the men's basketball team in the wake of a shooting incident last week near the school's campus. In a statement Monday, Georgia Tech coach Brian Gregory said neither Rice nor London Warren were with the team as it prepared to play Miami-Florida in the ACC Tournament last Thursday.
Gregory said Rice was still serving a suspension that began last month. He said Warren, the graduate student manager, was suspended from his duties and was not on the bench because of the incident. Warren was later let go.
The coach said he was "deeply disappointed" by the incident, which left the future of Rice, a junior, in jeopardy.
"Glen was suspended from team activities on February 17 and was serving that suspension when this incident occurred," said Gregory. "We will review his status in our program in the near future."
According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, the police report says Rice was a passenger in an SUV leaving a midtown lounge that was stopped after officers responded to a call of shots fired.
Warren, the driver, was charged with DUI and Rice was charged with permitting unlawful operation. Another passenger who was not associated with the team was charged with discharge of a weapon while under the influence after he admitted he fired a shot from a 9-millimeter pistol.
Rice, the son of the former NBA star, led the team in scoring and rebounding but played only 21 games because of two suspensions. He was also suspended for the first three games of the season for violating team rules.
