San Diego fires men's hoops coach Grier

Mar 16, 2015 - 9:44 PM San Diego, CA ( - The University of San Diego fired men's basketball coach Bill Grier on Monday after eight seasons.

The Toreros went 15-16 this past season, their fifth losing record in the last six years. They were 8-10 in the West Coast Conference, good for fifth place.

"Bill, his staff and their families have represented the university well and we appreciate all of their contributions over the years," San Diego athletic director Ky Snyder said in a statement. "We'll begin conducting a national search immediately."

Grier was hired in March 2007 and led San Diego to an NCAA Tournament berth in his first season. The Toreros upset Connecticut in the first round but have not been back to the tournament since.

They went 117-144 in Grier's eight seasons.

"I'm more disappointed than anyone that we didn't win more games, but I know we did things the right way," Grier said in part of a statement released by the school.
