Hurley has new deal at Rhode Island
Apr 2, 2015 - 4:06 PM Kingston, RI (SportsNetwork.com) - Dan Hurley will remain at Rhode Island with a new contract. The university has agreed to a new deal with its men's basketball coach, a restructured pact that includes an extension through the 2021-22 season. He will also receive a raise, going from his current $630,000 to a guaranteed $1 million by the 2017-18 season.
Hurley just completed his third season with the Rams, who finished 23-10 in 2014-15 and reached the second round of the National Invitation Tournament.
"Consistently successful athletic programs provide a level of exposure, awareness and interest in the marketplace to promote and attract additional resources to important academic, scholarly and service programs of the university," said URI President David M. Dooley. "We are pleased with Dan Hurley's performance, and want to ensure that we are able to build on the successes of this past season."
Hurley's stock has begun to rise in the coaching ranks. He spent two seasons at Wagner, turning around a program that was 5-26 before he arrived into a 25- game winner in his final season of 2011-12 with the Seahawks.
It's been a similar story at Rhode Island.
The Rams were 7-24 before he arrived and won just eight games in his first season. However, the plus-15 win margin over the past two years is the third- best among all Division I programs.
"I am proud to continue to lead and build the men's basketball program at the University of Rhode Island," said Hurley. "I would like to thank the entire university community -- especially Dr. Dooley, (athletic director) Thorr Bjorn, and the URI Foundation -- for their proactive leadership and commitment. It is an exciting time for our program moving forward."
The 42-year-old Hurley played at Seton Hall and served as an assistant coach at Rutgers from 1997-2001. He also spent nine years as a head coach at St. Benedict's Prep of Newark, New Jersey, leading the high school powerhouse to a 223-21 record.
