Marshall staying at Wichita State with new deal

Apr 2, 2015 - 10:43 PM Wichita, KS (SportsNetwork.com) - Wichita State men's head basketball coach Gregg Marshall may have considered a different address, but he is going to stay with the Shockers.

The university announced Thursday that Marshall has agreed in principle to a new seven-year contract worth a reported $3 million annually.

Marshall canceled a planned trip to Alabama to continue negotiations with Wichita State, according to the Wichita Eagle. The Crimson Tide had targeted Marshall, who has spent eight highly successful seasons leading the Shockers' program, as its choice to replace the recently fired Anthony Grant.

"I'm just amazed at what Wichita has done. We are blessed by all the people who stepped up to make this possible," Marshall said in a statement. "This is a wonderful city, university and program with great support from so many friends, as well as our administration. Now we can return to our goal of being a shining example for a college basketball program."

Marshall has a record of 204-76 with the Shockers, including a Final Four appearance in 2013 and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament in 2014 after an unbeaten regular season. This year's squad finished 30-5, losing to Notre Dame in the Sweet 16.

"We're thrilled that the Marshall family will remain in Wichita," said Wichita State president John Bardo. "What he has done with our program as the window to the university is fantastic, and we look forward to working with him for some time to come."

Before taking over at Wichita State, Marshall spent nine years as head coach at Winthrop. He became the Big South's all-time winningest coach with a mark of 194-83 and took the Eagles to the NCAA Tournament seven times.
