Arkansas-Little Rock hires Beard as men's coach

Apr 9, 2015 - 5:03 AM Little Rock, AR (SportsNetwork.com) - Arkansas-Little Rock hired former Bobby Knight assistant Chris Beard as its new head men's basketball coach on Wednesday.

Beard had a 47-15 record over the past two seasons at Division II Angelo State and previously served on Knight's staff at Texas Tech.

He replaces Steve Shields, who was fired on March 18 after going 192-178 in 12 years as coach of the Trojans, including 13-18 this past season.

Shields led UALP to consecutive 20-win seasons in 2007-08 and 2008-09 and to the program's first NCAA Tournament berth in 21 years in 2011.
