Hartford upsets Syracuse on Schaefer's late shot

Mar 22, 2008 - 9:36 PM BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (Ticker) -- MaryLynne Schaefer hit a 3-pointer with 13 seconds remaining Saturday, lifting No. 10 seed Hartford to a 59-55 victory over No. 7 Syracuse in an NCAA Tournament first-round game.

Schaefer scored a career-high 19 points as the Hawks moved on to face Texas A&M in the second round of the Oklahoma City Regional on Monday. The Aggies advanced earlier Saturday with a 91-52 rout of Texas-San Antonio.

After hitting the 3-pointer that gave Hartford (28-5) a 57-55 lead, Schaefer clinched the win with a pair of free throws.

Lisa Etienne contributed 10 points for the Hawks, who led 25-23 at the intermission despite shooting just 29 percent in the first half.

Erica Morrow scored 17 points for Syracuse (22-9), which remained winless in the NCAA Tournament. The Orange has lost in the first round of all four of their tournament appearances.
