Nebraska holds off Xavier to reach second round

Mar 23, 2008 - 10:50 PM COLLEGE PARK, Maryland (Ticker) -- Kelsey Griffin matched a season high with 26 points Sunday as No. 8 seed Nebraska held off No. 9 Xavier, 61-58, in the first round of the Spokane Regional.

Griffin keyed Nebraska's first tournament win in 10 years but not before the Cornhuskers (21-11) nearly squandered a 51-37 lead in the final 8:41.

Jerri Taylor scored 19 points for Xavier (24-9), which closed to 61-55 on Dominique Kelley's layup with 16 seconds remaining. Amber Harris hit another 3-pointer with seven seconds left to account for the final score.

Tay Hester contributed 13 points and Cory Montgomery added 12 for Nebraska, which will face top-seeded Maryland in the second round on Tuesday. The Terrapins advanced with an 88-60 win over No. 16 Coppin State on Sunday.

Xavier suffered its third straight first-round loss after reaching the Mideast Regional finals in 2001.
