UNC's DeShields to transfer

Apr 17, 2014 - 8:56 PM Chapel Hill, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - North Carolina standout guard Diamond DeShields will transfer from the program after just one season, Tar Heels head coach Sylvia Hatchell announced Thursday.

DeShields was named the National Freshman of the Year by the United States Basketball Writers Association after averaging 18.0 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 36 games and helping the Tar Heels reach the Elite Eight of this year's NCAA Tournament.

"I do not know or understand why Diamond DeShields has decided to leave the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill," said Hatchell, who sat out this past season while battling leukemia that has since gone into remission. "It breaks my heart that I will not have the opportunity to coach Diamond and help develop her on and off the court. I love her and wish her well."

DeShields, the daughter of former Major League Baseball player Delino DeShields, was one of the nation's top recruits out of Georgia's Norcross High School.
