Miami-Ohio hires Notre Dame's Martin as coach

Dec 3, 2013 - 10:49 PM Oxford, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Miami-Ohio has hired Notre Dame offensive coordinator Chuck Martin as its new football coach.

Martin, the former head coach at Division II Grand Valley State, will try to turn around a program coming off its first winless season in 25 years.

"I look forward to getting back to the excellence Miami stands for and am excited to hit the ground running," Martin said in a statement.

Miami fired coach Don Treadwell on Oct. 7 after an 0-5 start and named Mike Bath interim coach. The RedHawks went 0-12, their first season without a win since 1988 under Tim Rose. Treadwell was in his third season.

Martin spent the past four seasons at Notre Dame, the last two as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, helping the Fighting Irish reach the BCS National Championship game last season.

As head coach at Grand Valley State, he won back-to-back Division II national championships in 2005-06 and finished runner-up in 2009. He was on the staff of the GVSU teams that won consecutive titles in 2002-03.
