Offense rolls in SE Louisiana spring game
Apr 16, 2016 - 11:07 PM (STATS) - Southeastern Louisiana coach Ron Roberts went into spring practices saying no player on the team had a starting position locked up.He must have liked how many players staked their claim to spots - especially on offense.
The Green offense defeated the Gold defense, 44-9, in Southeastern's annual spring game Saturday at Strawberry Stadium in Hammond.
The Lions won Southland Conference titles in 2013 and '14 behind the play of former quarterback Bryan Bennett, but they slipped to 4-7 last season with injuries and uneven play at the position.
In the spring game, the offense scored points in the traditional way as well as for first downs and big plays. The defense earned points by forcing three-and-outs and stops as well as turnovers.
Returning quarterbacks D'Shaie Landor and Donovan Isom continue to push each other. Landor, a senior, led Southeastern with 44 rushing yards and was 5 of 11 for 78 yards and a touchdown. Isom, a sophomore, was 6 of 8 for 50 yards.
Senior Rasheed Harrell led all rushers with 39 yards and a touchdown, while sophomore Jake Ingraffia had four receptions for 27 yards and junior Kaylan Richardson caught Landor's TD pass.
Junior Jeff Williams II paced the Gold with a team-high seven tackles. Junior Jon Taylor and sophomore Sean Clavelle both had two sacks as the defense racked up seven.
Roberts has assumed the defensive coordinator's position this season. Southeastern returns only four defensive starters.
The Lions open their 2016 season on Sept. 3 at Oklahoma State.
