Samford's Bradberry goes to Panthers in 2nd round

Apr 30, 2016 - 2:03 AM (STATS) - The Carolina Panthers just lost a cornerback who played on the FCS level. They added a new one in the NFL Draft Friday night.

The 2015 NFC champions selected Samford cornerback James Bradberry with the second-to-last pick of the second round - No. 62 overall.

"He's long, he's got good movement skills, he's very raw," NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock said. "But in Carolina, they protect their corners very well. So he tackles well and he'll fit exactly what (defensive) Sean McDermott does."

The Panthers are replacing former Pro Bowl cornerback Josh Norman, the former Coastal Carolina standout who signed as a free agent with the Washington Redskins.

In the 6-foot-1, 211-pound Bradberry, the Panthers get a 2015 All-Southern Conference first-team selection who also made the STATS FCS All-America third team. The bump-and-run corner made 45 career starts and had 45 tackles as a senior as well as two interceptions for the fourth straight season.

Bradberry became the seventh player in Samford history to be selected in the draft. Last year, his former teammate in the Tigers' secondary, safety Jaquiski Tartt, was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the second round.
