Jaguars pick FCS Defensive POY Holmes

Apr 30, 2016 - 9:28 PM (STATS) - Montana football coach Bob Stitt says Tyrone Holmes plays every day at "a hundred miles an hour."

The Jacksonville Jaguars caught up to the former FCS All-American.

The AFC South franchise selected Holmes in the sixth round of the NFL Draft on Saturday with the 181st overall pick.

The 6-foot-4, 250-pound Holmes is expected to convert from a college defensive end to outside linebacker in the NFL. He was voted the 2015 STATS FCS Defensive Player of the Year, leading the nation with 18 sacks. He started the final 40 games of his career, finishing with 34 1/2 sacks and 49 1/2 tackles for loss.

"If you work hard, you can be successful," Holmes said after the East-West Shrine Game. "I guess playing at a smaller school, we don't really see what the level of competition is like elsewhere, so we kind of build it up to more than it is. Everyone is just like us and it's not that much of a difference, I guess. The only thing that's different is guys of high caliber. It's still football, it's not too much different."

Holmes impressed many scouts at Montana's pro day as he showed his strength and speed, recording 28 bench press reps at 225 pounds and going under 4.6 seconds in the 40-yard dash.
