Pulse's patience too much for Steel
Apr 14, 2014 - 10:01 AM Central Pulse edged up the trans-Tasman netball league ladder with a flattering 62-54 win over Southern Steel in Invercargill on Monday. The Pulse moved into fourth place with the victory, their fourth from seven games and their second over the Steel this season after last month's 67-56 win in Wellington.
The Steel's defensive effort was outstanding early on, particularly in the attacking third where Wendy Frew, Rachel Rasmussen and Erena Mikaere really slowed down the Pulse's feed into shooters Irene van Dyk and Donna Wilkins.
The Pulse's patient approach continued in the second spell, Camilla Lees and Elias Shadrock content to work the ball around the front third until a gap opened.
They mixed pace and variation cleverly, with van Dyk and Wilkins working hard to balance the circle and find openings.
They were rewarded in the closing minutes of the second quarter with a three-goal run which tied the score 31-31 at halftime.
The third quarter went goal for goal, opening up in the final five minutes as both teams generated turnovers but struggled to convert the possession into goals.
The Pulse finished the stronger, nailing the last three goals to take a 48-45 lead into the final 15 minutes.
They lifted to win the final stanza 14-9.
