Guthrie signs with Mystics

Jul 17, 2014 - 3:40 AM Northern Mystics have bolstered their midcourt for next year's trans-Tasman netball league by signing England international Serena Guthrie.

The versatile 24-year-old, who plays wing defence and centre, joins an already strong Mystics midcourt which combines Silver Fern Laura Langman and new signing Millie Lees.

Guthrie has been playing for Bath in England's Superleague since she was 16, and caught the eye of Mystics coach Debbie Fuller two years ago while on holiday in New Zealand.

The Jersey-born netballer was invited to train with the Mystics, and made an immediate impression.

"Since then I have been following her progress," says Fuller, who describes Guthrie as a dynamic attacking player who also sustains defensive pressure throughout a game.

Guthrie, preparing with the England team for next week's Glasgow Commonwealth Games, says she's looking forward to her first foray into trans-Tasman netball.

"I'm looking forward to seeing how I match up, week in and week out. After seeing some of my England teammates playing in it, it's definitely something I've wanted to be a part of for a while now."

Guthrie fills the Mystics' import spot left open when Australian international Julie Corletto left after signing with the NSW Swifts.
