Firebirds hitting straps at the right time

Apr 22, 2017 - 5:32 PM Skipper Gabi Simpson says the Queensland Firebirds are hitting form at the right time ahead of their potentially season-defining match with the Magpies in Tasmania.

The back-to-back trans-Tasman champions are locked in a battle with the Magpies for the fourth and last qualifying spot for the finals and whoever wins next Sunday will have the advantage going into the last four rounds.

The Firebirds struggled early in the season after losing Laura Geitz, Clare McMeniman and Kim Ravaillion - who now plays for the Magpies - from their 2016 championship winning side.

Simpson insists she sees the signs of a winning team building again, though she warned against losing their intensity as they did in the last quarter against the West Coast Fever on Saturday night, which saw the margin reduced to a less-flattering 55-50 scoreline.

"We've really come together as a group in the last two weeks," Simpson said.

"If you look over the season we've had people sparking at different times and now we're getting to the stage where we're up and at it together.

"I think for three quarters we were fantastic. You could feel the flow coming through the court.

"In the fourth quarter our defensive (pressure) stepped off a bit which allowed them to get back in the game and we can't afford to do that."

Simpson feels her team can produce their best when it matters most, both next week in Launceston's Silverdome and into the finals.

"We want to show we're in it to win it," Simpson said.

"We want to get to the final. We'll work really hard this week to make sure we are ready for that intensity of game. Next week there will be 100% per cent improvement."
