Wolski's shootout goal lifts Avalanche over Red Wings
Sep 26, 2006 - 4:20 AM DENVER (Ticker) -- Wojtek Wolski scored in the fourth round of a shootout to lead the Colorado Avalanche to a 5-4 preseason victory over the Detroit Red Wings.Paul Stastny and Brett McLean also scored for the Avalanche in the shootout, while Jiri Hudler and Jason Williams tallied for the Red Wings.
Wolski scored the game-winner when he skated in, deked goaltender Chris Osgood and slipped the puck inside the right goalpost.
Colorado trailed late in the third period before forging a 4-4 tie when McLean beat Osgood with 28 seconds left off a feed from Ian Laperriere.
Detroit had taken a 4-3 lead early in the third period as Matt Hussey beat netminder Jose Theodore at 2:57 and Jakub Kindl tallied 5 1/2 minutes later.
Osgood, who went 20-6-5 with a 2.76 goals-against average in 32 games last season, made 32 saves.
Theodore, who came over in a trade with Montreal last season, turned aside 22 shots.
Colorado went 2-for-5 on the power play, while Detroit was 1-for-5 with the extra skater. The Avalanche also outshot the Red Wings, 40-30.
Captain Joe Sakic did not suit up for the Avalanche, while reigning Norris Trophy winner Nicklas Lidstrom did not play for the Red Wings.
