Michalek concludes solid preseason in Sharks' victory

Oct 1, 2006 - 6:05 AM SAN JOSE, California (Ticker) -- Milan Michalek is serving notice that he is ready to make a dramatic offensive impact in the upcoming season.

Michalek scored two goals and Patrick Marleau added a goal and three assists to lead the San Jose Sharks to a 5-1 victory over the Calgary Flames in the preseason finale for both teams.

After scoring 17 goals and adding 18 assists for San Jose last season, the 21-year-old Michalek netted his sixth and seventh preseason tallies Saturday to help the Sharks win for the sixth time in eight contests.

Michalek opened the scoring with 1:14 left in the opening period by converting Marleau's setup feed and beating goaltender Jamie McLennan.

After being pulled down on a breakaway at 8:58 of the second session, Michalek was awarded a penalty shot but failed to capitalize on his opportunity.

Marleau scored his third preseason goal only 11 seconds later to give San Jose a 2-0 lead. After Mark Bell added a tally at 2:32 of the third period, Marleau assisted on goals by Michalek and reigning Hart Trophy winner Joe Thornton in a 1:32 span.

Defenseman Andrei Zyuzin snapped netminder Vesa Toskala's shutout bid by scoring with 3:06 remaining for the Flames, who ended the preseason with a 3-3-1 mark.

The Sharks open their season Thursday against the St. Louis Blues, while the Flames begin that same night against the Edmonton Oilers.
