Alfa Romeo back in Formula One

Nov 29, 2017 - 10:34 AM Italian car makers Alfa Romeo are returning to Formula One racing after more than three decades as part of the Sauber team.

The two parties have signed "a multi-year technical and commercial partnership" from next season onwards, according to a joint statement released on Wednesday.

Alfa Romeo will be the title sponsor of the Swiss team which will be named Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team and have the cars bear the Alfa Romeo logo.

Alfa Romeo is part of the Fiat Chrysler group which also includes Ferrari who are Sauber's new engine suppliers.

The marque won the first two F1 world titles in 1950 and 1951 and later was an engine supplier for several teams before withdrawing in 1985.

"This agreement with the Sauber F1 Team is a significant step in the reshaping of the Alfa Romeo brand, which will return to Formula 1 after an absence of more than 30 years," FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne said.
