Rainout gives Dixon pole in Iowa

Jun 22, 2008 - 1:08 AM NEWTON, Iowa (Ticker) -- Reigning Indy 500 champion Scott Dixon was awarded the pole for Sunday's Iowa Corn Indy 250 on Saturday after qualifying was canceled due to rain.

The 24-car field was set based on entrant points. For the second straight year, Dixon, who leads all drivers with 284 points, will be joined by Helio Castroneves in the front row here. Castroneves trails Dixon by 35 points.

It is Dixon's fourth pole of the season.

"Starting on points is not the way anyone wants to see it," Dixon said. "Everyone wants to see qualifying go off because it would have been exciting with the conditions. It's a great start for us. This track is very much about track position and with the rainout, we starting in a much better position than we would have."

Dixon's teammate with Chip Ganassi Racing, Dan Wheldon, will start on the inside of lane two. Wheldon will be flanked by Tony Kanaan, while Ryan Briscoe will be in lane three alongside Danica Patrick. Hideki Mutoh and Marco Andretti will occupy the fourth row, with Ed Carpenter and Oriol Servia rounding out the top 10.

Dario Franchitti, who edged Andretti here in the inaugural race last season, is not in the field.
