Boyer, Edwards set for showdown in Homestead

Nov 15, 2008 - 6:24 PM HOMESTEAD, Florida (Ticker) -- Clint Boyer still has some work to do if he plans on capturing his first Nationwide Series title.

Needing to finish eighth or better in Saturday's Ford 300 to gaurantee the title, Boyer will start 13th in the grid after posting a qualifying time of 32.49 seconds at a speed of 166.190 miles per hour.

Carl Edwards, who enters the season finale just 56 points behind Boyer, had a better showing in Saturday's qualifying session at Homestead-Miami Speedway and will go out second after negotiating the 1 1/2-mile oval in 32.11 seconds.

Edwards trailed Boyer by more than 200 points in September, but the defending champion has trimmed the deficit by winning three of his last seven races, including a checkered flag last week in Phoenix. Since winning at Richmond on September 7, Edwards' has finished fifth of better in every race.

Boyer, who has led the series for 29 straight weeks, hasn't exactly faded during Edwards' push as he has just one finish out of the top 10 since August.

Joey Lagano will start on the pole after posting a fast lap of 31.96 seconds, followed by Edwards, David Ragan (32.20) and 2007 winner Jeff Burton (32.24).

Kyle Busch, who is bidding to break Sam Ard's record for wins in a season with his 11th triumph, will start 11th. Saturday's 200-lap race is scheduled for 4:47 p.m. EST.
