Edwards reveals shock knee recovery
Sep 13, 2017 - 7:18 AM Penrith fullback Dylan Edwards has revealed how he stubbornly defied the negative prognosis of club physios to turn out in his first NRL finals campaign. After going down with a grade two medial tear in his left knee in the club's round 25 clash with St George Illawarra, it was initially feared the 21-year-old's rookie season was over.
However he was back on the park after missing just one week to be involved in the Panthers' finals upset win over Manly on Saturday night.
In the week leading up to the clash, he was told by club medicos that he was unlikely to take the field but pushed through to prove his fitness.
"The physio was pretty honest with me and she did everything she could and I did everything I could," Edwards said.
"I had my first run and she said 'mate, I don't know if you can but it's going to depend on how the knee pulls up after the run'. Lucky for me it pulled up alright.
"I was pretty realistic and she was really honest with me, I was touch-and-go. I wanted to play, I just didn't want to go out there and let the team down."
At the forefront of Edwards's mind was that he'd miss out on a finals debuy while the side was also going to be without five-eighth Matt Moylan for personal reasons.
"That crosses your mind but if you're not right, you're not right but lucky for me I was alright," Edwards said.
"It was everything I dreamt of and the game didn't disappoint, it was a tough, physical encounter with Manly."
