Warriors to weigh up purchase offer
Sep 27, 2017 - 6:07 PM The Auckland Rugby League has revealed it is in contention to buy the Warriors.Following news that owner Eric Watson was open to selling the under-performing NRL club, the ARL has confirmed it is in preliminary discussions as buyers.
ARL chairman Cameron McGregor told NZME it had submitted a letter of intent to the club and hoped to become majority owners.
"We see ourselves as a natural fit with the club," McGregor said.
"We have had discussions with the owners of the Warriors and they have been encouraging so far."
McGregor said his organisation has a commitment to developing local players and believed that would be an important step forward for a club who haven't reached the play-offs for six successive seasons. They lost their last nine games of 2017 to place 13th.
The ARL were the original owners when the Warriors joined the NRL in 1995.
It would look to take over in conjunction with a corporate partner, McGregor said.
