Kane Evans heard bones in wrist break

Oct 31, 2017 - 5:19 AM Kane Evans has revealed he heard the bones in his wrist break as he scored a try for Fiji in their Rugby League World Cup opener against the USA.

The Parramatta-bound prop was ruled out for the tournament and will require surgery on his left radius and ulna following the devastating injury in Fiji's 58-12 win over the Hawks.

The 25-year-old was immediately taken from the field after he landed awkwardly on his hand, but will be fit to return for the Eels pre-season in January with the injury set to sideline him for 10-12 weeks.

"I knew straight away when I scored the try and heard my bones break that I knew my World Cup was over," Evans said.

"It was pretty frustrating. Especially after the year I had at the Roosters. I didn't get to play the last game and we were kicked out of the major semi."

Evans' injury came as part of a double blow for the Fijians in the opening week of the World Cup.

While they established themselves as one of the genuine finals contenders with their flogging of the USA, they also lost Brisbane prop Korbin Sims after he failed to overcome a fractured arm suffered in late August.

It will leave Fiji with only one recognised NRL prop in their starting pack, for their final group matches against Italy and Wales, after Evans ran out alongside Ashton Sims last weekend.

"It will be tough. But I have that much confidence in our pack," Evans said.

"I know our squad can deliver. If you look at Fiji over the past few World Cups you always see someone come through and surprise everyone. I expect someone to come through."
