Sailor name back in the Red V

Nov 14, 2017 - 5:14 AM The Sailor name could be back in the NRL with St George Illawarra as early as next year.

Tristan Sailor, the son of Queensland, Brisbane and Dragons great Wendell Sailor, was one of several new faces in the Dragons' NRL squad at pre-season training last week.

After a stellar debut year in the under-20s, the Dragons had enough faith to sign the 19-year-old utility to a two-year contract extension which will keep him in Wollongong until the end of 2019.

He will in 2018 step up to be a part of the Dragons' top 25 as a development player and will be eyeing a first grade debut at some point over the next two seasons.

"I played soccer until I was eight but because of dad I wanted to follow in his footsteps," Sailor said.

"Being around that culture, it was always a goal of mine to get into this squad."

Wendell Sailor won three grand finals, made 21 Australian and 17 Queensland appearances over an illustrious career which also included five years in rugby union during which he was capped by the Wallabies 37 times.

He returned to rugby league via the Dragons in 2008-09, where he became a club favourite, before hanging up the boots.

Asked about the pressure that comes with having a famous last name, Tristan said he had learnt to embrace it and was determined to carve out his own path.

"I'm not really feeling it. I just want to develop, I don't think too much about that," he said.

"Through the juniors there's probably been a bit of pressure but that's external. But I thrive under it."

Sailor debuted for the Dragons national youth competition side as a winger this year but is capable of playing five-eighth or fullback.

He is highly rated and was nominated for the Dally M and Rugby League Players Association under-20s player of the year award.

Asked about his ambitions for 2018, Sailor said: "(Coach Paul McGregor) just wants me to work as hard as I can, put in that effort, build a little bit of size up and we'll go from there."
