Lions flanker O'Brien cited for Naholo hit

Jul 2, 2017 - 1:45 AM The British and Irish Lions could be without one of their standout performers for the third Test against the All Blacks after flanker Sean O'Brien was called before the judiciary.

O'Brien faces a charge of dangerous play after an incident midway through the second half of the Lions' second-Test win in Wellington.

A hearing on Sunday evening will determine the Irishman's fate following an alleged swinging arm to Waisake Naholo which knocked the All Blacks winger out and forced him out of the game.

Australian citing commissioner Scott Nowland said the incident warranted a red card.

Abrasive Leinster forward O'Brien has been among the Lions' best in each of the first two Tests.

His case will come just hours after the hearing of Sonny Bill Williams, who was sent off for a first-half shoulder charge to Anthony Watson's head.

With Williams unlikely to avoid suspension and Ryan Crotty (hamstring) ruled out, Hansen will add a midfield back to his squad for the third Test at Eden Park on Saturday.

Candidates include dropped 2016 selections Malakai Fekitoa and George Moala, along with uncapped Crusaders centre Jack Goodhue.

Meanwhile, All Blacks coach Steve Hansen says Naholo passed concussion testing but didn't return to play as a precaution because of the initial knock out.

The winger will be considered for the decider.

"He's fine," Hansen said. "He woke up this morning chipper, so that's great."
