South Africa marks 100 days to World Cup

Mar 2, 2010 - 2:02 PM DURBAN, South Africa(AP) -- South Africans are proudly declaring themselves just about ready, 100 days before they host the World Cup.

At a ceremony marking the achievement Tuesday in the port city of Durban, main organizer Danny Jordaan said: "As South Africans we have encountered a lot of skepticism but today, as we celebrate this milestone, we can confidently say to the World that we will be ready."

Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe said the "brick and mortar" is finished, and now it will be up to all South Africans to prepare to be good hosts.

In addition to the main celebrations in Durban, where the national team will play Namibia in a new stadium Wednesday, South Africans gathered in Johannesburg to dance, and in Cape Town to sing the national anthem.
