Jol sacked as Fulham boss
Dec 1, 2013 - 5:59 PM Martin Jol has been sacked as manager of Fulham and replaced with immediate effect by Rene Meulensteen, who had been operating as head coach.Saturday's 3-0 defeat to West Ham United was Fulham's fifth in a row in the Premier League and left them third bottom of the table.
"Martin was very gracious and I appreciate his understanding of the situation," said owner Shahid Khan, who took over from Mohammed al-Fayed.
"There is no question Martin is an excellent football man and he has my utmost respect for the commitment he made to our club.
"However, our poor form and results this season are undeniable, and Fulham supporters deserve better. With more than half the season still ahead, an immediate change was necessary."
Meulensteen was appointed on November 13 to work alongside Jol but always seemed a manager in waiting.
"Rene Meulensteen was brought to Fulham to assist Martin and today was offered the challenge and opportunity to step in for Martin," Khan said.
"I thank Rene for accepting and now we move forward. I have great confidence in Rene and high expectations for our squad to respond."
Meulensteen served as an assistant coach to Sir Alex Ferguson in two spells at Manchester United but, after leaving the club as David Moyes took over, he had 16 days in charge of turbulent Russian side, Anzhi.
Fulham face Tottenham Hotspur at Craven Cottage on Wednesday night.
