Algeria fined for laser incident
Jun 30, 2014 - 8:00 PM FIFA have fined the Algerian Football Federation 50,000 Swiss francs ($A61,797) for a laser beam shone in the face of Russia's goalkeeper by Algerian fans during their final group game. The federation was also reprimanded over the use of the laser beam, flares and smoke bombs during the June 26 Group H game which ended in a 1-1 draw and saw the Algerians progress to the latter stages of a World Cup for the first time.
A FIFA spokeswoman said Algeria had been "held liable for the improper conduct among its own group of spectators."
Russia coach Fabio Capello said at the time that goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev was "blinded" by a green laser beam shone in his eyes seconds before Islam Slimani's equaliser.
The Algerian FA said in a statement that it "deplores" the behaviour of troublesome fans at the World Cup.
