Deportivo hires Fernandez

Jul 11, 2014 - 11:45 AM Deportivo La Coruna have hired former Zaragoza coach Victor Fernandez ahead of their return to Spanish topflight football.

Fernandez signed a one-year deal to head the Galician outfit, which sacked coach Fernando Vazquez soon after achieving promotion. Despite a second-place finish, Vazquez was fired following critical remarks over Deportivo's transfer policy.

Fernandez guided Zaragoza to a 2-1 victory over Arsenal for the UEFA Cup Winners Cup in 1995 after Zaragoza won the Copa del Rey the previous season.
