Elbow proves costly for Njoku
Jun 15, 2015 - 2:17 AM Nigeria defender Ugo Njoku has been suspended for three games at the Women's World Cup for elbowing Australia forward Samantha Kerr. The Matildas won the match 2-0 but the victory was marred by the second-half incident when Kerr was elbowed in the face.
Njoku, who came on as a substitute, will not be allowed to play in Nigeria's final group-stage match against the United States on Tuesday in Vancouver.
Nigeria, ranked No. 33 in the world, drew 3-3 with Sweden in their opening match before falling to Australia after a pair of goals from Kyah Simon.
Njoku was also fined for the incident and if the African country does not advance to the knockout round, the remaining suspension will be served over Nigeria's next two official matches.
