Aussie Lyden debuts in Aston Villa loss
Apr 9, 2016 - 4:46 PM Australian defender Jordan Lyden has made his English Premier League debut as his side Aston Villa's relegation was all but confirmed in a 2-1 loss to Bournemouth. The first goal of Saturday's game at Villa Park came from Steve Cook at the stroke of halftime on a back-heel finish, and was followed by Bournemouth's second, from Josh King, in the 73rd minute, giving the south coast side the win.
Aston Villa scored a rare consolation goal from Jordan Ayew in the 85th minute.
The result means that barring a miracle, Aston Villa will be relegated at the end of the season due to a 15-point gap between itself and safety with only five games to go and a far inferior goal difference.
With a dismal season set to end Villa's long run in the top tier, many supporters at the ground booed their own players as their names were read out at the start of the match.
Lyden was an exception, instead receiving loud applause as he prepared to take the field in central midfield.
The 20-year-old was substituted at the break, replaced by Rudy Gestede.
With the win, Bournemouth climb to 11th place.
